The apparatus for online measurement of toxic concentrations in sewage has a laboratory robot for the automatic preparation of samples, extraction and sample measurement from the laboratory or a flow system. An extraction unit automatically increases the analyte concentration, and the extract is transferred automatically to a measurement cell. The actual spectrum is evaluated by a chemometric calibration model to give the sum total parameter of the toxic concentration. The chemometric results are converted electronically into a signal which can be transmitted e.g. to a process control. A calibration model measures the concentration of other substances which have a spectroscopic activity. The measurements can be in a liquid phase without extraction or a gas phase.
