Blocks (1) are applied to underlying surface (2). Essentially freely movable distressing bodies (4) are applied to the surface to be worked of the blocks. The blocks and the distressing bodies are brought into movement in relation to one another by a vibrating motion of the underlying surface in such a way that the distressing bodies act on the surface and the adjoining, exposed edges of the block. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for artificially ageing blocks.
