The installation method has a detector (M) with a light transmitter (1) and receiver (2) installed in a first position, with an installation tool fitted to the detector used for transmission of a marking light beam in the same direction as the transmitter light beam, for marking the corresponding installation position for the cooperating reflector (4), used to reflect the transmitter light beam back to the receiver. An independent claim for an installation tool for a linear optical smoke detector is also included.
