Oxidation of propane with molecular oxygen in sub-stoichiometric proportions relative to propane in the presence of a specified catalyst, the process operating as a redox system. Preparation of acrylic acid from propane, in which a gaseous mixture containing propane, molecular oxygen , water vapor and, if required, an inert gas is passed over a catalyst of formula (I): Mo1VaTebNbcSidOx; a, b, c : 0.006-1; d : 0-3.5; x : quantity of oxygen dependent on the oxidation states of the elements. The molar ratio of propane / oxygen is greater or equal to 0.5.
