Valorization of silico-aluminous ash consists of: (a) measuring the water content (W) of the ash and, when required, treating the ash to provide a water content in a range defined by a first value limit (W1) corresponding to an optimal water content (WOPN) allowing the obtention by mechanical compacting a maximum degree of compaction and a second value limit (W2) equal to the first value limit augmented by 2 %, and the optimal water content being usually between about 30 and 45 % by weight with respect to the dry weight of the ash; (b) utilising the ash or composition of which the water content is in the defined range as a sealing material to form a sealed barrier by treating, adjusting and compacting of the ash or the composition at the desired emplacement for the sealed barrier. An independent claim is also included for a sealed barrier made from compacted silico-aluminous ash.
