The process involves positioning an oscillator on a theoretical initial frequency to permit demodulation of a video signal transmitted according to a video standard. Bursts of reference pulses of the signal are demodulated at the frequency. The frequency and/or demodulation parameters are modified if values of recognition criteria determined from the pulses are not satisfied and the steps are repeated until the criteria are satisfied. An independent claim is also included for a video signal receiving circuit.
