The method involves determining internal temperature of a catalyst by calculating an average of temperature quantity of exhaust gas by admission of the gas in a catalyst for a limited period of time. The measurement is carried out by a functional variable of oxygen activity effectuated by the catalyst. The variable is determined from a quantity of fuel introduced into an engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining internal temperature of a catalyst of vehicle equipped with a thermal engine.
