The identification procedure includes photographing using a mobile phone terminal and transmitting the characteristic information to a database. The database checks authentication data, and compares the transmitted characteristics with those held in the memory of the database, and returns information corresponding to the identification which has been made. The procedure for identification of a person, or an object, includes photographing the person using a mobile phone terminal and transmitting the characteristic information to a database. The database compares the transmitted characteristics with those held in the memory of the database, and returns identification information to the remote terminal corresponding to the identification which has been made. The phone terminal also transmits further parameters enabling authentication of the enquiry at the database. This authentication information may be the telephone number of the calling mobile phone handset, or the IMSI number associated with the handset. Further information used in the identification may include the location of the person at the time of the enquiry, and a voice recording used for further clarification of the identity.
