The method involves determining a target flow for an image, and determining a quantization step corresponding to the flow. The image is compressed by quantizing using the quantization step, and maximum flow of the compressed image is compared with the target flow. Digital data among digital data constitutive of the image is suppressed based on the comparison result, to make the maximum flow equal to the target flow.
