The catalyst (17) for the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine (10) is managed to give an absorption of nitrous oxide (NOx) during a storage phase, and be regenerated in a regeneration phase. The shift between the phases is a function of the calculated NOx mass (mnospm) from a storage catalyst model (39) The measured oxide mass (mnosps) is registered by a sensor (30) located after the catalyst with a signal transmission line (31) to set and give the oxide mass curve slope and provide an interpolation of the measured mass. The calculated and measured oxide masses are compared, or their deviation, to adapt the model with a correction signal (80), which is also used to measure the age of the catalyst.
