The process involves modeling the pressure in a combustion chamber (12) of an internal combustion engine (10) by calculating and utilizing a relation defining variations of polytropic state. The pressure modeling by calculation takes into account a relation between the polytropic coefficient and operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a control apparatus calculating injection pulse width.
