The method involves displaying a consumption index (101) and a control index (1) in respective fields of a display of a digital-type meter. Control information (100) of the consumption index is incorporated in the control index whose value depends on values of the consumption index. The control index incorporates temporary information (200) obtained from data relating to duration of functioning of the meter. An independent claim is also included for a digital type meter of measuring consumption of consumable materials.
