The method involves activating counting of a newly coded meter reading at a meter, during an increase or decrease of a meter reading. The newly coded meter reading is determined by using a forward linked one-way function of the coded meter reading. A display area of the function is included in a prototype area of the function. The meter reading is initialized with an initial meter reading before the initial increase or decrease of metering conditions. Independent claims are also included for: (1) A testing method for testing an authenticity of a meter reading of a meter; (2) A coding device for executing the coding method for securing a meter reading of a meter before an additional manipulation; and (3) A testing device for executing the method for testing an authenticity of a meter reading of a meter.
