The procedure uses a cartography system (2) with a digital image acquisition apparatus (16) to produce an image of a leather skin (13) being tested, which is processed and has a statistical algorithm applied to it. This makes it possible to calculate, within an analysis window centred on a given pixel of the image and using a mask with at least two regions (R1, R2), the relative likelihood of the presence of a fault in the first region relative to the second, and thus obtain an image of probability indicating the likelihood of faults for each pixel. The cartography system used for the procedure comprises a conveyor belt (7, 8) that carries the skins to an acquisition point (4) with a digital camera (15) and lighting with reflective (17) and transmission (19) sources.
