An device to render harmless pathogens in the air flow entering at leaving communal ventilation systems comprising a length of air transmission conduit comprising an insert of a shape calculated to reduce the air flow to a minimum compatible with minimum pressure loss and expose the whole of the air flow to one or more sources of electromagnetic radiation located in the device : The sources of radiation emit in a wavelength corresponding to the absorption peaks of pathogens or one of their constituents. The source may be a laser or maser mounted axially to the conduit or one or more sources disposed in the walls of the reduced flow section, a combination of both or in any other arrangement that insures that the whole of the air flow is swept. The dimensions, characteristics and joints of the device air conduit correspond to those in current use. Where air pressure might be too much reduced, the device can be equipped with a ventilator to propel the air.
