Using plant extracts, or active ingredients purified from them, as lipolytic, slimming and anti-cellulitis agents, in cosmetic, nutraceutical or pharmaceutical compositions

Use as active agents, with lipolytic, slimming or anti-cellulitis activity for preparing cosmetic, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical compositions, of at least one extract (A) from plants of the genera Aspidosperma; Catharanthus; Eschscholzia; Bocconia; Vismia; Orbignya; Terminalia; Entada; Hypericum; Ginkgo; Viburnum; Papaver and Butea. Independent claims are also included for: (1) similar use of at least one of the compounds (B) papaverine, rhoeadine, palasonin, amentoflavone, yohimbine, chelerythrin and/or hypericin, (partially) purified from the specified plants; and (2) cosmetic, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical compositions, containing (A) or (B) and having active ingredient content 0.01-25, preferably 0.5-10, wt. %. ACTIVITY : Dermatological; Anorectic; Antiinflammatory; Antipsoriatic; Antiarthritic; Virucide. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Induction of lipolysis, specifically (a) inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE) 3 and 4 and stimulation of adenyl cyclase (AC) and (b) antagonism of the neuropeptide Y1 receptor, the adenosine A1 receptor and the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor, resulting in an increase in intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate. An extract of Vismia latifolia had IC50 29 mu g/ml against PDE3; gave 75 % inhibition of PDE4 at 50 mu g/ml and 74 % activation of AC at 500 mu g/ml.
