The procedure for baling the stems of fibrous plants, especially flax, hemp or sisal, that are at least partially retted, comprises collection and baling stages that are carried out on plants that have had their tops and root ends cut off. After the plants have been picked up by a lifter (3) their stems pass through a crusher (4) with pairs of contrarotating grooved rollers (5, 6) that break up woody filaments. They are then decorticated in two successive stages, each covering one side of the stems, to remove any woody fragments and leave the fibres in a flat layer, the fragments being collected and recycled.
