The process involves illuminating a section of a railway track by a coherent light source, and digitally capturing the illuminated section. Values taken at measuring points are compared with corresponding values of a required section previously recorded in a data base. Measures of corresponding deviations are extracted, and a corresponding excess or shortage of weight of a ballast is calculated at the measuring points. An independent claim is also included for a rail transit car including a coherent light source.
