The method involves removing polluted ballast cuttings under a railway track along a predetermined width and separating soil from ballasts by evacuating the soil. Stops are recreated and the largest ballasts are hammered. The ballast whose dimensions are comprised between predetermined upper and lower values is retrieved. The retrieved ballast is washed by a mechanical action of washing with water. A railway track is reloaded by utilizing the washed ballast and a new ballast. An independent claim is also included for a device for processing a ballast during maintenance and servicing operations of a railway track.
