An apparatus for monitoring the depth of the tread on a road vehicle tyre comprises sensors placed in the wheel arches or the tyres. The senors provide signals indicative of the wear on the tyre or the depth of tread. Warning lights on the dashboard, for each tyre, indicate to the driver the state of the tyre tread including if a tyre change is imminent or if the tread depth is illegal. Different coloured lights indicate the degree of tyre wear. An alternative method based on the average life expectancy of the tyres and the mileage done on the tyres, taken from the odometer, is also disclosed.
