Change of focus from step type in one window to mouse type cursor in second window

A method of changing from a block type cursor 140 in a main window 110 to a free cursor 15 in a sub-window 12 is disclosed. The focus of the display may be changed by use of an arrow key (71a, fig. 7) on a remote control to jump between blocks of text 130, 160 or a sub-window 120. Conventionally selection of one of these items is made by pressing a further key (71b, fig. 7) on the remote control. Switchover in this instance is achieved by selecting the sub-window for a fixed period of time when the cursor changes to a mouse type pointer, and obviates the need to press further buttons. Switching back to the main window may be accomplished by pressing the arrow key in an outward direction when the cursor is in a border region, pressing the arrow key for a fixed period or lapse of a fixed interval.
