PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for enantioselectively preparing a β-cyanocarboxylic acid from an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid derivative whereby the reaction can proceed even when the type of the α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid as a reaction object is diversified. PSOLUTION: The method is one used for preparing a β-cyanocarboxylic acid represented by formula II from an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid derivative represented by formula I and comprising the step of obtaining the β-cyanocarboxylic acid derivative by reacting the α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid derivative with a cyano source in the presence of a ligand represented by formula III and a catalyst active site source represented by MSBx/SB(ORSB3/SB)SBy/SB(wherein M is a metal; RSB3/SBis, for example, an alkyl group; and x and y are integers stoichiometrically determined from the metal M).
