PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyelectrolyte material which has low fuel crossover and good adhesion to electrodes; and to provide a polyelectrolyte membrane, a membrane electrode complex, and a polyelectrolyte fuel cell which realize high-power output and high enery capacity. PSOLUTION: The polyelectrolyte material is composed of hydrocarbon polymer containing at least ionic groups. The polymer has characteristics of enough flexibility in a moisture state and enough smallness of swelling in fuel.
