PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an attenuator suitable for a high frequency transmitter-receiver and practical, wherein the attenuation thereof is easily and minutely adjusted. PSOLUTION: The attenuator is configured in such a way that: a dielectric line 3 for propagating a high frequency signal is arranged between flat plate conductors 1, 2 located in parallel at an interval of a half or below of the wavelength of the high frequency signal; a recessed part 4 opposed to part of the dielectric line 3 is formed in an inner face of the flat plate conductor 2; and the recessed part 4 is formed with a through-hole 5 formed in the flat plate conductor 2, and a conductor member 6 for filling up the through-hole 5. Since an electromagnetic wave propagated through the dielectric line 3 is leaked to the recessed part 4 and the recessed part 4 acts like a stub for forming a standing wave, a reflection coefficient when viewing an output terminal 3b from an input terminal 3a can continuously be changed by changing the depth of the recessed part 4, so that the attenuation is easily and continuously changed in matching with a desired condition by only changing the depth of the recessed part 4.
