PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article discrimination method and an article discrimination device that discriminate foreign materials mixed in with a large quantity of articles at high speed and with a high degree of precision.;SOLUTION: The present invention comprises: a shape feature vector extraction step (Step 2); a color feature vector extraction step (Step 3); a feature vector creation step (Step 4) which creates the feature vector of the image of the article to be discriminated by synthesizing the color feature vector and the shape feature vector; a dimension compression step (Step 5) that maps the feature vector by a conversion matrix obtained by the canonical correlation analysis and calculates a new feature vector; a distance calculation step (Step 6) for calculating the distance between the new feature vector of the image of the article to be discriminated and the new feature vector of a sample image belonging to the standard class; and a discrimination step (Step 7) for discriminating the distance by the threshold and discriminating whether the article to be discriminated belongs to the standard class.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
