PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold cavity detection method and a mold cavity detector for detecting a mold cavity in the vicinity of the surface of a casting, before performing final machining works on the surface of the casting.;SOLUTION: This mold cavity detector 1 is equipped with an eddy current detection part 10, a thermal imaging part 20, and a mold cavity determining part 30. The detection part 10 is equipped with an eddy current sensor 11 for generating eddy currents in the vicinity of the surface 5a of the casting 5 by a high-frequency current, while detecting a change in the eddy current, and an oscillator 12 for generating the high-frequency current for the current sensor. The taking part 20 is equipped with a heat source 21 for heating the vicinity of the surface of the casting and an infrared thermograph 22 for taking thermal image of the surface of the casting heated by the heat source.
