PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an earth retaining method using soldier piles and horizontal sheet piles, which is carried out by quickly covering an exposed excavated wall surface with the horizontal sheet piles, and quickly bringing the latter into tight contact with the former, to thereby avoid loosening of the ground around the construction site. PSOLUTION: The earth retaining method using the soldier piles and horizontal sheet piles, which employs H beams 11 as the soldier piles, is comprised of the following steps. In the first step, flanges 12 of the respective H beams are arranged along the earth retaining wall surface to be constructed, and embedded in the ground. In the following step, messer steel plates 10 each having a width equal to an interval between the pairing flanges 12 adjacent to each other, are arranged on a rear side of the flanges, and while each messer steel plate is moved downward with a gap secured between the messer steel plate and a rear surface 12a, excavation is carried out on a front side of the flanges 12. In the last step, each horizontal sheet pile 13 is inserted and arranged in the gap between rear surfaces 12a of the flanges 12 and the messer steel plate 10 via both ends thereof to be held along a front surface of the messer steel plate 10, and after downward movement of the messer steel plate 10, the horizontal sheet piles cover the excavated wall surface which is exposed to the outside in an area above the messer steel plate 10, followed by driving wedge members 15 to the horizontal sheet piles 13 to fasten the horizontal sheet piles 13 to the excavated wall surface.
