PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carburizing layer detecting method capable of easily detecting a carburizing layer.;SOLUTION: An ultrasonic flaw detector 10 is constituted so as to bring a probe T on a transmission side and a probe R on a receiving side into contact with the surface 11 of a test target 30 to detect the flaw of the test target 30. The probe T on the transmission side emits pulses 41a and 42a easy to cause horizontal wave/longitudinal wave mode conversion with respect to the test target 30 and the probe R2 on the receiving side receives the mode conversion pulses 41c and 42c subjected to mode conversion from the base 13 of the test target 30. The probe R1 on the receiving side receives the mode conversion pulses 41b and 42b subjected to mode conversion from the boundary surface 45 with the carburizing layer 25.
