PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization preserving optical fiber having excellent polarization preserving characteristics even if a clad diameter is reduced to about 80 μm and incurring a very small connection loss when connected to an optical fiber having a clad diameter of 125 μm.;SOLUTION: The polarization preserving optical fiber comprises a core 1, a pair of stress imparting units 2 provided on both sides of a core 1, and a clad 3 surrounding the core 1 and the stress imparting units 2. Setting the diameters D of respective stress imparting units 2 to 21-32 μm, an interval R between the stress imparting units 2, 2 to 6-17 μm, and a relative refractive index difference Δ between the core 1 and the clad 3 to 0.3-0.5% can ensure a sufficiently large mold field diameter (MFD) and reduce a connection loss.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
