PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool and a method by which a snap ring can be quickly, easily, and surely attached/detached without requiring special skills by improving an attachment/detachment technique for the snap ring 3 fitted to a ring groove 2a of a shaft member 2, and also, which can prevent peripheral equipment (not illustrated) from being accidentally damaged.;SOLUTION: A ring expansion guide 6 is brought into contact with the shaft member 2 by aligning their centers with each other. A snap ring 3' drawn with a chain line is pressed down by a press-fitting cylinder 7 by using the ring expansion guide 6 as a jig and fitted into the position of the snap ring 3 drawn with a dotted line. In order to extract the fitted snap ring 3 (drawn with the dotted line), the ring expansion guide 6 is brought into contact with the shaft member 2 by aligning their centers with each other, and the press-fitting cylinder 7 is externally fitted to the ring expansion guide 6. A ring expansion rod 8 to be guided by the press-fitting cylinder 7 is pressed down (an arrow (a)).
