PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new gene associated with the sterility of a plant and a technology for transducing an abortive character by using the gene. PSOLUTION: The method for transducing the abortive character into the plant is provided by inhibiting a GUT1 gene encoding a pectin-glucuronic acid transferase, e.g. a method for making the GUT1 gene as antisense by using a DEX(dexamethasone)-inducing promotor. The method for producing a male aborsive or female aborsive plant by using these methods, and further an NpGUT1 gene encoding the pectin-glucuronic acid transferase and having a specific base sequence associated with the expression of tobacco sterility character are provided.
