PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a square tube for housing an electronic component for effectively manufacturing a package for an optical-electrical conversion component.;SOLUTION: The square tube for housing the electronic component having an excellent plating characteristic is formed of an alloy steel including Ni: 28 to 32 mass%, Co: 15 to 20 mass%, sulfur(S) and oxygen(O) as an impurity in an amount of 50 ppm or less, and a remainder substantially composed of iron (Fe), and by that, the surface roughness Ra is in a range of 0.02 to 2.0μm. This square tube is manufactured by following processes (1) to (3). (1) A steel piece is thermally extruded under 1,100 to 1,250°C to manufacture material tubes for cold working. (2) The square tube is manufactured by repeating a plurality of cold workings and intermediate treatment temperature cycles in which a heating temperature is set to 850°C or less when an oxygen concentration in an atmosphere is 1% or lower, and to 750°C or less when the oxygen concentration is 1% or higher and 3% or lower. (3) Surface roughness Ra is adjusted to 0.02 to 2.0 μm by polishing the manufactured square tube.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
