PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image predictive decoding method, an image predictive decoder, an image predictive encoding method, an image predictive encoder and a data storage medium capable of efficiently performing predictive encoding even when the sizes of a reference image becomes zero or when the reference image is completely transmitted to a variable size image.;SOLUTION: In the encoding method to input image data formed by compressing and encoding an image with variable image size by a prescribed method, to generate a predictive image from at least one reference image reproduced earlier than an image to be a decoding object and to perform predictive decoding to the image to be the decoding object, the predicted image is generated at least one reference image the size of which is not zero and reproduced recently.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
