PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting whether or not an ink cartridge is replaced while a power source is in an off-state in terms of an ink jet printer. ;SOLUTION: A print control section 3 of an ink jet printer 1 has an EEPROM 71 that stores information as to whether or not an ink cartridge is loaded when a power source is in an off-state (flag F3), information as to the presence or absence of residual ink (flag F1) and information as to whether or not the quantity of the residual ink is not more than a predetermined level (flag F2). When the power source is turned on, the stored contents are compared with actual detected results of a cartridge sensor 27 and an ink near end sensor 28, then it is judged whether or not the ink cartridge is replaced during the off-state of the power source. When it is determined that the ink cartridge is replaced in accordance with the judgment, a head cleaning operation is executed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
