PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring device for particulate matter(PM) in exhaust gas and a soot signal detecting method in measuring PM in exhaust gas capable of detecting a soot signal precisely for a fluctuated base signal. ;SOLUTION: Gas G exhausted from an internal combustion engine 1 is collected as sample gas S. The sample gas S is introduced into a hydrogen flame ionization detector 5. For extracting a pulse-like soot signal by providing a threshold for an original signal (a) provided from the hydrogen flame ionization detector 5, a process for producing a signal [f(t-t0)] delayed by a specified time t0 from the original signal [f(t)], and a process for producing a signal [F(t)=f(t)-f(t-t0)] comprising positive and negative pulse components by subtracting the signal [f(t-t0)] from the original signal [f(t)] are included. This procedure cancels fluctuation of a base signal, thereby reproducing only a pulse signal, resulting in precisely detecting the pulse signal and a total hydrocarbon(THC) signal which are the soot signals when the base signal fluctuates.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
