PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new mercapto compound for optical material and curing agent for resin, etc., having high sulfur content and low in offensive smell by reacting bis-(2-mercaptoethyl)sulfide and specific pentaerythritol derivatives in the presence of a base. ;SOLUTION: This new mercapto compound is tetrakis(7-mercapto-2,5-dithia- heptyl)methane expressed by formula I, having high sulfur atom content, polyfunctionality and low in offensive odor, useful in organic optical material region as raw monomers giving a high refractive index resin caused by the high sulfur content and curing agent, etc., of an epoxy resin. This new mercapto compounds is obtained by carrying out the reaction of bis-(2-mercaptoethyl)sulfite and pentaerythritoltetrahalide or sulfonic acid ester of pentaerythritol expressed in formula (R is a 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, nitrophenyl, tolyl) in the presence of a base.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
