N - [(2 '(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) biphenyl-4-yl) methyl] - (L) -valine benzyl ester in the form of a salt of formula 11, wherein X is the residue of a strong inorganic acid, C1, Br, or Sat. sub.4.n., process for their preparation and their use for the production of valsartan, wherein the compound of formula 11 is reacted with valeryl chloride in the presence of a base, preferably a tertiary amine to form a compound of formula 9, from which removed benzyl protecting group to afford valsartan.
