The present invention provides herbicide tolerant plant cells and plants. The plants according to the invention (such as maize, wheat, sorghum, rye, barley, grass and rice) are transformed with modified eukaryotic or prokaryotic protox coding sequences or wild type or prokaryotic protox sequences which are herbicide tolerant. The invention further relates to a method for controlling growth of undesired vegetation as well as to a method of selecting the transformed plants.
