The method involves selecting a frame on which dithering is to be performed, and filtering a bit data based on frame group conditions to represent a gray scale with another set of bits. One bit of the latter set is obtained by subtracting N from the data, where N is 2 bits. A dither matrix is selected for the selected frame. A temporal/spatial compensation is performed on the matrix based on lower N bits of the filtered data. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for performing dithering in an image-displaying device.
