The method is for cleansing ballast water on board ship, using a container with at least 10 and particularly at least 100 mini-hydrocyclones, preferably made of polyethylene or polyurethane. The mini-hydrocyclones are placed in a housing, preferably of polyurethane. Using the method, the average size of the residual particles in the cleaned ballast water is particularly less than 10 micro-meters.
