Described is a method for identifying a non-human mammal having a genotype that is indicative of advantageous milk production traits that comprises analyzing the polymorphism of the Pit-1 and kappa-casein genes of a biological sample that comprises the non-human mammal's DNA. The simultaneous presence of allele A and/or T of the Pit-1 gene and allele B of the kappa-casein gene is indicative of high potential for milk production and protein production of the non-human mammal. Also described are kits designed for identifying a genotype that is indicative of advantageous milk production traits in cattle.
