A method for reducing the production of methane emanating from the digestive activities of an animal by using one or more essential oil compounds selected from a group consisting limonene, eugenol, a salicylate, quinoline, vanilla, thymol or a cresol. The compound is then administered to the animal. Also described is a feed composition, a feed premix and a drinking water supplement.
