A method of secure transmission from a biometric smartcard reader

A method of providing secure transmissions from a biometric smartcard reader is disclosed, the method includes the steps of (a) encrypting a signal created by a biometric smartcard reader dependant on a smartcard containing biometric data. The smartcard reader is able to obtain biometric data directly. The signal includes access information dependant upon biometric data obtained directly by the biometric smartcard reader from a user, where the biometric data is contained in the smartcard, (b) transmitting the encrypted signal to a high security module at a remote location relative to said biometric smartcard reader, (c) translating by the high security module at the remote location the transmitted signal to another format useable by an access controller, and (d) controlling an access mechanism using the access controller which is dependant upon the translated signal.
