Information is exchanged by sending messages comprising one or more previously defined information blocks, each block containing one or more previously defined information component controlled by the information block definition. In order to receive the message the receiving party defines one or more message classes by indicating which information blocks a message is expected to contain. The user can then send the message to the receiving party using the message class as a model for the message structure and contents. Configuration of a message class is carried out by a message control centre (2, 4) and the generated message classes are then stored on a message server (1) for access by all message control centre clients. A number of standard data formats are associated with each information block and each format corresponds to an algorithm which can either render a certain type of information block on a certain type of medium or can render a user interface for manually recording the information block on a certain medium. Automatically rendering each block this way allows the entire message to be rendered in more than one way, even for unique message classes.
