A composite shell deflection compensated roll of a paper/board machine or finishing machine, has a thin coating layer of metal and/or ceramic on an inner surface of the composite shell. The layer extends in the axial direction of the shell over the axial length determined by load element(s). A composite shell deflection compensated roll of a paper/board machine or finishing machine, comprises a stationary roll shaft on which is arranged load element(s) (11), which exerts a load on the inner surface of the composite shell (1), in the direction of the nip formed with the backing roll. The inner surface of the composite shell has a thin coating layer (3) of metal and/or ceramic. The layer extends in the axial direction of the shell over the axial length (L) determined by the load element(s). An independent claim is also included for a method of making a deflection compensated roll with composite shell.
