The method involves attaching an exhaust gas sensor at a roadway side, in a region of a roadway surface or over a roadway. A gas sample is obtained directly from an exhaust gas cloud (1) of a motor vehicle. A volume proportion or weight proportion of exhaust gas component and/or exhaust gas opacity of the gas sample is measured and assigned to the motor vehicle passing a measuring device (3). The exhaust gas sample is transported to the measuring device by a pump and/or suction device. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring an exhaust gas component in an exhaust gas cloud of a motor vehicle driving past at a measuring device.
