A method for reducing the formation of nonvolatile residue (NVR) in ethylene oxide (EO) comprising: providing a vessel retaining EO comprising ferric ions; and, contacting said EO with fresh electron source input material, wherein said electron source material is a fresh metal having a reduction potential to less than +0 electron, 77 V with reference to standard hydrogen electrode (EEH).
