Prostheses for the treatment of urinary incontinence by exerting pressure on a patient's urethra, said prosthesis including an elongated and flexible element and a distensible part located on said elongated element, said expandability of the distensible part (14) being altered to vary the pressure exerted by said distensible part (14) on the urethra (40), characterized in that the elongate element (12) is in the form of a sling or suspension element so that, during use, the prosthesis (10) can be inserted dorsally between a urethra and a patient's pelvic bone and be coupled to the pelvic bone so that said elongated element (12) forms the suspension device around the urethra (40) with the distensible part (14) disposed between said urethra (40) and the surface of the suspension device (20).
