Non-tumorigenic cell composition obtained from mammalian embryonic stem cells, which contains: a) at least 85% of isolated neural precursor cells with the ability to differentiate to form neuronal or glial cells, and b) not more than 15% of primitive embryonic cells and non-neural cells, which can be obtained by the following steps: (a) proliferation of ME cells; (b) culturing the ME cells of step (a) to form neural precursor cells; (c) proliferation of neural precursor cells in serum-free medium containing growth factor; (d) proliferation of the neural precursor cells of step (c) in another serum-free medium containing growth factor, and isolation of the purified neural precursor cells; and (e) proliferation of the neural precursor cells of step (d) in another serum-free medium containing growth factor, and isolation of purified precursor cells that have the ability to differentiate to form neuronal and glial cells, in the that the serum-free medium containing growth factor of step (d) comprises bFGF and EGF, and wherein the serum-free medium containing growth factor of step (e) comprises bFGF and PDGF.
