CONTINUOUS PASSIVE MOTION DEVICE FOR UPPER EXTREMITY FOREARM THERAPY

A continuous passive motion (CPM) device for the synovial joints andsurrounding soft tissue of the human body, more specifically to the upperextremities. The device includes an upper arm support suitably fixed to adriveactuator and a adjustable forearm support attached to the rotational center ofthedrive actuator so that pivotal movement of the output causes the forearmsupportto pivot about an axis parallel to a longitudinal axis of the forearm support.Various cuffs are provided so a patient can secure their upper arm above theelbow and the upper forearm below the elbow to the device with the actuatorlocated either forward of or behind the elbow. The rotational motion ofpronationand supination is created by aligning the rotational center of the actuatoroutputwith the anatomical rotational center of the forearm. The rotational centersareconcentric to minimize stresses on the affected limb. The relative rotationalmotion between the upper support and forearm support creates the passiveanatomical motion of pronation and supination.
